Is Your Medicare Part D Plan Still the Right Fit for 2027?
If you have Medicare or are preparing to enroll, your prescription drug coverage through Part D deserves a close look every year. Plans change their formularies, premiums and pharmacy networks annually, which means the plan that worked well for you last year may no longer be the best fit.
Understanding Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D is the federal program that helps cover the cost of prescription drugs for people with Medicare. Part D plans are optional and offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. People who choose Part D coverage may pay a monthly premium, and the amount varies by plan. Each plan has its own list of covered drugs, called a formulary. Coverage can vary by plan, so a drug covered under one plan may not be covered, or may be covered at a different tier, under another.
Many people access Part D through a standalone Prescription Drug Plan added to Original Medicare or through a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage built in.
What’s New for Medicare Part D in 2027?
The Inflation Reduction Act brought significant changes to Medicare Part D, and its redesign of the Part D benefit structure, which began in 2025, continues in 2027 with updated amounts.
The maximum standard annual deductible rises to $700 (up from $615 in 2026), and the annual out-of-pocket cap on covered prescription drugs increases to $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026). Once your out-of-pocket drug spending reaches $2,400, you pay nothing more for covered medications for the rest of the calendar year. Additionally, 15 newly negotiated drug prices, including medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
Medicare.gov is the most reliable place to review updated plan details during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 each year. These changes affect how costs are structured throughout the coverage year, so reviewing your current plan before the enrollment deadline is crucial.
Why You Should Review Your Prescription Drug Coverage
Your health and your prescriptions change over time, and so do the plans available in your area. Some common reasons a plan review makes sense:
- Your current medications may have moved to a higher cost-sharing tier on your plan’s formulary.
- A preferred pharmacy in your network may have changed.
- A lower-premium or better-fitting plan may now be available in your area.
- Your income or eligibility for Extra Help, a Medicare program for lower-income enrollees, may have shifted.
- Your medications may have changed since you last enrolled.
The Medicare Plan Finder tool at Medicare.gov lets you compare plans by entering your specific drugs and viewing estimated annual costs side by side.
