Changes to Medicare Annual Enrollment Period in 2027
If you’re a Texas resident nearing Medicare eligibility, already enrolled or helping a loved one with coverage, here’s what’s changing with the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period and what you can do now.
Texas Annual Enrollment Period
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs each year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this window, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription Drug (Part D) plans. This is your opportunity to review your current coverage, compare new plan options, and make sure your health and prescription needs are covered for the coming year.
If you miss the Dec. 7 deadline, your current plan usually rolls over into next year with any changes the carrier made, and you generally must wait until the following fall to switch. Two exceptions can help. From Jan. 1 to March 31, Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment lets you move to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare. Outside those dates, a qualifying life event such as moving out of your plan’s service area, losing employer coverage or entering a nursing home can open a Special Enrollment Period.
What’s Changing for Medicare in 2027?
While Medicare’s core structure remains the same, 2027 brings several updates that may impact Texas beneficiaries:
- Plan offerings and benefits: Insurance carriers often adjust their Medicare Advantage and Part D plans each year. In 2027, expect changes to plan networks, covered medications and out-of-pocket costs.
- Regulatory updates: Federal and state regulations may introduce new requirements for plan transparency, prescription drug pricing or preventive care benefits. Notably, the Part D premium-stabilization subsidy is ending, which is expected to raise premiums for many beneficiaries.
- Technology and access: Plans may offer expanded telehealth services and digital account tools.
How Can You Prepare Now?
A few steps now will make the 2027 Annual Enrollment Period easier:
- Review your current coverage. Look at your plan’s benefits, costs and provider network, then note any changes in your health or prescription needs.
