Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program: A Guide to GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drug Access
Beginning July 1, 2026, Medicare launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary program that may help certain people with Medicare drug coverage access specific GLP-1 weight-loss medications for a $50 monthly copayment.
For many people, the key question is simple: “Could I qualify?” The answer depends on your Medicare drug coverage, health history, body mass index (BMI), and whether Medicare already covers a GLP-1 medication for you through your regular Part D plan.
What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a short-term CMS demonstration program that runs from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. It operates separately from a person’s regular Medicare Part D drug benefit.
The program gives eligible beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications prescribed for weight management. It is not a guarantee of coverage, and a health care provider must determine whether a medication is appropriate.
Which GLP-1 medications are included?
As of July 2026, the program includes:
- Foundayo® tablets
- Wegovy® injection or tablets
- Zepbound® KwikPen®
The program does not cover Zepbound single-dose pens or vials.
How much do Medicare GLP-1 drugs cost through the Bridge program?
Eligible individuals pay a $50 copayment for a one-month supply.
Because the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge operates outside the normal Part D payment process:
- The Part D deductible does not apply.
- The $50 copayment does not count toward a Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit.
- Extra Help does not reduce this $50 copayment.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan cannot spread this cost across monthly payments.
Who may qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
To be considered, you must have Medicare Part D drug coverage and be at least 18 years old. You also need to meet the program’s BMI and health criteria when you start GLP-1 therapy.
You may qualify if one of the following applies:
- Your BMI is 35 or higher.
- Your BMI is 30 to 34.99 and you have an eligible condition, such as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease stage 3a or higher, prediabetes, a previous heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease.
- Your BMI is 27 to 29.99 and you have prediabetes, a previous heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease.
Your doctor or other qualified health care provider should confirm whether you meet the criteria.
Who may not qualify?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is not the right path for everyone. You generally are not eligible if:
- You already receive GLP-1 drug coverage through your Medicare Part D plan.
- You have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease. In these situations, your Part D plan may cover a GLP-1 medication for the condition instead.
- You do not have qualifying Medicare drug coverage or do not meet the clinical criteria.
How do you get started?
Start with your health care provider—not an insurance application. Your provider can discuss whether a GLP-1 medication is medically appropriate, send a prescription to the pharmacy, and complete prior authorization when required. Your provider must also certify that the medication is being used as part of a lifestyle program focused on diet and exercise.

The bottom line
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge may create a new access option for certain people with Medicare Part D coverage who meet specific criteria. It is temporary, eligibility-based, and separate from standard Part D coverage. A conversation with your health care provider is the right first step.
